A note from our practice:
During this worldwide health crisis, Dr. Lasater has been continually reviewing research to stay up-to-date and provide the best information and advice to patients. He has written the article below to share some recent and relevant findings.
Hormones and Risk of Coronavirus Infection (CoVID-19)
There are several published medical studies that have found a protective benefit against severe viral influenza from elevated estrogen levels – in particular, higher ESTRADIOL levels. These studies looked, for instance, at data from the 1918-1919 worldwide “Spanish flu” pandemic and the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Although COVID-19 isn’t strictly speaking the same as influenza, there are nevertheless enough similarities between these two forms of viral infection that make it possible – perhaps even likely – that higher blood levels of estradiol might protect women from COVID-19. Medical researchers in New York have just this year made the very intriguing observation that pregnant women with COVID-19 infection have been faring far better than their counterparts did during the H1N1 pandemic in 2009. One of the researchers has said that this observation “argues for estrogen being part of the answer for protection.”
A clinical study has now begun, and hopefully the hypothesis that higher estrogen levels may be protective will one day be proven conclusively. The extremely cautious woman should perhaps wait until those studies are completed and eventually published before taking action. But those women already in or near menopause who are uncomfortable waiting and are instead willing to ‘connect the dots’ and take pre-emptive measures to maintain their health might possibly consider bio-identical hormone replacement to reduce their chance of suffering a severe COVID-19 infection.
