There are several published medical studies that have found a protective benefit against the severity of viral influenza with elevated estrogen levels – in particular, higher ESTRADIOL levels – for women. These studies looked, for instance, at data from the 1918-1919 worldwide “Spanish flu” pandemic and the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Although CoVID-19 isn’t strictly speaking the same as influenza, there are nevertheless enough similarities between these two forms of viral infection that make it possible – perhaps even likely – that higher blood levels of estradiol might protect women from CoVID-19. Hopefully this hypothesis will one day be proven conclusively, and the cautious woman should wait for those studies to be completed and published. However, for those women who are uncomfortable waiting but instead are willing to ‘connect the dots’ and take pre-emptive measures, estrogen replacement for women in or near menopause might be worth considering to reduce the incidence and/or severity of CoVID-19 infection.
