Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Q & A

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy involves using light to improve the health, texture, and appearance of your skin. Sometimes called photofacials, these treatments stimulate your body to create collagen, thereby plumping the skin, enhancing elasticity, and stimulatingthe replacement of dead skin cells.

How does Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy work?

When Dr. Lasater performs an IPL treatment, he uses the Cynosure Icon. This innovative device delivers intense light pulses deep into your skin, targeting dark pigmentations, scar tissue, and imperfections, including age spots and wrinkles.

These treatments can also reduce unwanted hair growth and revitalize facial skin. If you want to address the signs of aging, Dr. Lasater may suggest IPL therapy to treat:

  • Rosacea
  • Sun damage
  • Large pores
  • Age spots
  • Facial veins
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stretch marks

When the laser light reaches your deep layers of skin, it stimulates the production of collagen and causes blood vessels to constrict. The collagen improves the skin’s texture and creates volume, while blood vessel constriction reduces redness and irritation.

Does Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy hurt?

When the light passes through your skin in during IPL therapy, it creates a warming sensation with very brief jolts that most patients describe as a rubber band snapping against the skin. This discomfort is mild and easily tolerated.

You may have a slight reddening around the treatment site for a few hours, but the procedure requires no downtime.

How many Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments do you need?

Although every case requires its own evaluation, in most cases, Dr. Lasater recommends 3 to 6 treatment sessions. Each of these treatments lasts around 30 minutes, and the doctor asks that you schedule them about three weeks apart.

You may notice results after just one treatment, but multiple sessions are advisable for optimal skin improvement.

Whether you want to erase the signs of aging or make your skin glow for a special event, consider IPL photofacial treatments. Call Optimal Wellness Medical to schedule your appointment or book it online today.
