Laser Hair Removal Q & A
How does laser hair removal work?
When you see Dr. Lasater for laser hair removal, he uses the Cynosure Icon laser system to deliver laser energy into your hair follicles. This laser light increases the temperature inside the hair follicle, hurting the cell’s integrity and making it unable to produce hair.
After you arrive at Optimal Wellness Medical, you’re shown to a room, and Dr. Lasater preps your treatment area. He may shave or trim your hair and apply a cooling gel to protect your skin and keep you comfortable.
He then uses the Icon device in your treatment area, sending laser energy to your hair follicles. Although most people don’t report the treatment as painful, it can feel like a snapping rubber band.
How long does laser hair removal last?
After you complete your entire laser hair removal regimen, your results remain permanent. You’ll need multiple laser hair removal treatments, but the number differs depending on the thickness of your hair and the tone of your skin. For instance, the less pigment in your skin, the more effective laser hair removal becomes.
The number of treatments also depends on your natural hair growth cycle. Each hair follicle goes through three stages, but the only time laser hair removal is effective occurs during the active growth phase. It can take 6-12 months for all of your hair to cycle through to active growth.
In most cases, Dr. Lasater recommends 3-7 treatment sessions during this period. In cases where your hair still grows, it becomes lighter and thinner.
How do you prepare for laser hair removal?
To get the optimal results from your Icon hair removal treatment, Dr. Lasater recommends that you stop plucking and waxing your treatment area for at least six weeks. When you pull the hair from the follicle, it lowers the pigment in the follicle, making laser hair removal less effective.
You can still shave during this period. Also, avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds. The less tan your skin, the more effective laser hair removal becomes.
When you’re tired of shaving, plucking, and waxing, find a permanent solution at Optimal Wellness Medical. Call to schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Lasater or book your appointment online now.
